New Demo on SoundCloud

I had some noisy riffs put together and my son liked them enough to practice drums to it, which in turn I ended up liking the drums he put to the song and blam-o. New song. My daughter also added some bass to the song, so I’ve been pretty smitten with the track. When it came to writing out the vocals and lyrics, I had a chorus in mind, that came pretty easy. For the verses and the bridge I did some inspiration seeking. Ultimately, I reflected on a conversation I had with my brother about disinformation on the internet. I was telling him about a song I had written in 2015 that I eventually learned (somewhat) how to record music on GarageBand for and release in 2019 called “Newsfeed” from an album called “Bot and Trolled.” He responded with “Huh, Ok, well yeah, a guy already wrote a book about that,” which ya know, at the time kind of bruised my petty little ego, but he left me with said book, “Trust Me, I’m Lying.” I am so glad he did because not only is it a fascinating read, but it was a source of inspiration for the lyrics of this song today. That and “The War of Art,” which is a book I often thumb through to find inspiration. Hence, the line in this new song: “Trust me I’m lying when I say, Fear will subside someday.” The first line obviously from the title of Ryan Holiday’s book and the second line inspired from an excerpt in “The War of Art” about how “resistance” never goes away. Context: “Resistance” is a concept unique to the book, if you haven’t read it you probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but of the many things that “resistance” is in “The War of Art,” it is often synonymous with fear.

Well, that’s a hoot huh? The song is called “Shakes” and I put a demo of what I’ve been plucking away at so far on SoundCloud.

Lyrics to “Shakes”:

Sell me a lie worth believing
Hold my confidence in wake

If that’s what you want, well you got it
If that’s what you think, well you own it
Is that what you need, now be honest
I won’t lose faith
Shake off the shakes
For one last time

Trust me I’m lying when I say
The fear will subside someday

If that’s what you want, well you got it
If that’s what you think, well you own it
If that’s what it takes, then I’m on it
Now, don’t lose faith
Shake off the shakes
For one last time

Take me out
Without pain, without persistence

Sell me a lie worth believing
All my confidence in wake

If that’s what you want, well you got it
If that’s what you think, well you own it
Is that what you need, now be honest
I Won’t lose faith
Shake off the shakes, shake off the shakes
